Emergence Our destruction of the rain forests this century, previously shielded from excessive human activity, has unleashed a number of deadly diseases into the general human population. A recent finding indicates that the hunting of chimpanzees in Africa may be how AIDS jumped to the human race. The good news is that these chimpanzees have a natural immunity to AIDS. So there may be hope for a vaccine by studying chimpanzees infected in the wild. The bad news is that it is difficult to isolate and test them. Plus, continued destruction of the chimpanzees by hunters in the "bushmeat" trade is rapidly bringing these already endangered animals to extinction. More health related links...
