5 Must-Have Apps for Filmmakers and Content Creators

These days, there are thousands of apps for filmmakers and content creators. As such, it's increasingly difficult to find those that are actually worth your time. However, taking advantage of the right app can be a game changer. An app can help you do something you otherwise couldn't do on your own, or it can make your life easier by streamlining tedious processes.

1. Sun Seeker

With a growing number of content creators and filmmakers working in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality, there are a wealth of apps available to help them make the most of their experiences.

Sun Seeker is a powerful tool for pre-production and location scouting in particular, this app uses augmented reality to show the sun’s position in a location at any given point of the year. It can be used to determine the best time of day to shoot a scene, but also to help plan out complex lighting setups.

The app is free to download on iOS (and there’s also an Android version) but some features are only available with a paid subscription plan.

2. Filmic Pro

As mobile content becomes more prevalent, apps like Filmic Pro allow users to unlock the full potential of their phone’s camera — giving manual access to key pro features. The app offers a range of cinematic presets that can be applied to any scene, and it allows you to adjust things like exposure and focus during filming. It’s also possible to shoot in 4K or slow motion, and you have the option to use a variety of different color profiles.

3. Scriptation

Scriptation is an industry-loved (and Emmy award winning) app that allows for seamless annotations of your scripts and easily shareable notes for revisions through their cloud storage service. The app is designed so that it can be used on any device, including a laptop or desktop. The interface is very intuitive, allowing you to easily add notes to any scene in your script. You can also view all of your scripts in one place and easily export them as a PDF or Word document.

The best part of the app is that you don't have to use it just for screenplays; you can use it for storyboards, treatments, pitch decks and more. And if you want to make sure everyone on your team has access to the same information, Scriptation allows you to share scripts with others so they can see what you're working on before they get on set or into the editing bay.

4. Shot Designer

Shot Designer is a one-stop shop for blocking complex scenes, creating storyboards, building out diagrams, and shot lists all in one. You can even create animated storyboards using your own voice recordings. The app allows you to import images from your phone or computer directly into your shot list, which is great if you're working with actors or crew members who don't have access to the app but need to see what's being shot on set.

Shot Designer has a lot of options for making sure you get everything right before you start shooting: You can add shot numbers, mark camera angles and lens type, mark important objects in each frame of video (like actors or props), add notes about what's happening in each shot, and much more.

5. Soundtracks

For filmmakers and content creators, Soundtracks is the only place where you can find royalty-free music that you can also customize alongside your videos, all in real time. There’s nothing more frustrating than finding a song that’s almost perfect. With the new Real Time Customization feature, you can change the energy levels, mute entire instrument groups, and balance all your audio levels seamlessly.
